For decades, the Rochester Turners Gym Team has been producing
winners. And this season is no different!
Women's gymnastics has been growing in recent years, perhaps due to the success of recent
Olympic teams.
Whatever the reason, gymnastics is alive and well in Rochester.
This years team consists of girls from New Brighton, Rochester, Freedom, Hopewell, Beaver
Falls, and Monaca, and all points in between.
Girls ranging in ages from 7-18, compete at different skill levels.
Classes offered are: Pre-school, Beginner, Intermediate, Advance, Pre-team and Team.
Pre-school classes begin with basics and sound fundamentals of gymnastics. As the girls
improve, they "graduate" to the next level, with the ultimate goal of reaching
the Team.
It would astound you to see how quickly these young girls learn tricks that seem
impossible to most of us.
They start competing when they reach the pre-team and team level, and by that time, they
have acquired an incredible amount of skill.
Their competitions include the same events you may have seen on the Olympics: Uneven Bars,
Vault, Beam and Floor Exercise.
Gymnasts at the Pre-team and Team levels can compete in compulsory and/or optional Gym
Meets. The compulsory meets are meets where girls compete only against other gymnasts of
the same skill level. Each gymnast performs a uniform routine with a
series of required tricks. At the Optional meet, the Girls have the freedom to come up
with their own routines. There are still requirements that need to be met, but the
routines and music are chosen by the individual gymnast, thus creating more variety.
Women's gymnastics has 10 compulsory levels, and the Rochester Turners Gym team current
has gymnasts competing
at levels 4-7.
The current Meet Season is drawing to an end, and the girls will be working all summer
until the start of the new season next fall,
many of them will moving up to the next level of competition.
The coaching staff at the Turners Club is second to none. The combined years of coaching
experience is countless, not to mention that many of the current coaches are themselves
quite accomplished gymnasts.
This team works hard. Hours, and hours of practice every week. And it shows! You couldn't
begin to tally the individual awards these girls have won. And the trophy rack at the gym
bears witness to their hard work!
